Palmer first becoming a dentist, he then turned to medicine and moved to Rugeley and set up a practise as a doctor, and married Ann Thornton. His mother-in-law, also Ann had inherited a fortune, so she became his first murder in 1849. Palmer had become interested in horse racing and borrowed money from a man he met at the races named Bladen who lent him £600. He also became a victim.

By 1854 Palmer was further in debt and forged his mother’s signature to pay off creditors and took out an insurance policy on his wife, his brother Walter and a friend George Bate. All subsequently died and the insurance company commenced investigations. Other deaths were planned and followed.

The story continues in some length until he was arrested, charged and convicted. During his waiting for execution there is much written of him during this time but throughout he would not admit his crimes even on the gallows when the noose was placed over his head.

The turmoil he placed on the families of those he poisoned to death and the amounts of money to feed his gambling habits, would be worth an absolute fortune today makes the story of Dr Palmer even more fascinating and a good read. His time in goal is worthy of recording as he was stubborn throughout acknowledging nothing and always maintained his innocence even on the gallows. All makes a fascinating read.
