ent 2 Barnum and Bailey – the killing of an elephant 1898.

Barnum and Bailey ‘s Greatest Show on Earth came to Stoke in 1898 and sadly the leading elephant had to be executed – by strangulation!

Sounds a strange title but it is a fact that the only method agreed by the USA with regards to the execution of elephants was by this method.  The most interesting thig is what actually happened to it once the elephant was dead. A great and interesting read.

Using original material of the day and person reflections of an 84-year-old Mrs Barker of South Terrace c1964 it gives a true account of one of Barnum’s prize elephants who had showed signs of uncontrollability throughout the street tour of the Potteries prior to the opening of the circus. The It was the only option under American law to execute the animal by execution and the method prescribed was that of strangulation. The article also does not hold back at the description of how this was carried out and the problems encountered. The article includes a large press advertisement of the coming show, a worthy contribution illustrating the style and attraction of adverts of the time. The secret of what happened to the dead elephant is almost like an Agatha Christie story left to the very end.
